First Awards of the Season 2019

April always begins award season in Science Fiction/Fantasy. The first two were the Kitschies and the Compton Crook. Two that are not really known, so this is what you should know:

The Kitschies are a British literary prize celebrating the year's most progressive, intelligent and entertaining works that contain speculative or the fantastic. The books had to be published in the UK during (but the author can come from anywhere in the world) the 2018 calender. This award has been handed out since 2011.

The Red Tentacle Award is for Best Novel:

Winner: Circe by Madeline Miller

Also nominated: Record of a Spaceborn Few by Becky Chambers, Rosewater by Tade Thompson, The Smoke by Simon Ings & Unholy Land by Lavie Tidhar

The Golden Tentacle Award is for Best Debut Novel:

Winner: Frankenstein in Baghdad by Ahmed Saadawi

Also nominated:Children of Blood  and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi, The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang, Semiosis by Sue Burke & Sweet Fruit, Sour Land by Rebecca Ley

The Compton Crook  is presented to the debut novel in the English language that is considered the best in the fields of Science Fiction, Fantasy, or Horror by the members of the Baltimore Science Fiction Society. The award has been around since 1983.

Winner: The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang

Also Nominated: The City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty, The Feed by Nick Clark Windo, Implanted by Lauren C. Teffeau, Sisters of the Winter Wood by Rena Rossner & Trail of Lightning by Rebecca Roanhorse
